BioHarry Dresden is a jerk. This is the simplest way to describe him, however, reducing him to such a simple description would do a great injustice to such a complex man. True, he often reacts to people by stating the first thing that comes to his mind, and he doesn't go out of his way to make people like him, but that is only because years of living in Chicago have given him a hard, jaded outlook on light and made him more than a little rough around the edges. This is also due to the fact that he has been screwed over, repeatedly, both due to his desire to help people while sticking to his beliefs, and also due to the various mistakes he makes while attempting to do just that.
Despite all this, he is basically a good person. He does not like to see innocents injured or killed, and in fact it angers him beyond imagining when somebody hurts a woman or a child, whether that woman or child is truly defenseless or not. He would willingly put himself into harm's way rather than see someone else get hurt, and would walk into danger alone rather than have someone be injured or killed while following him.
While Dresden is a wizard, he doesn't exactly do anything by the book, and most wizards consider his education spotty at best. Case in point, his grasp of Latin is extremely nonexistant, as he learned it primarily through a correspondence course, and he butchers the language both in conversation and in spellcasting.
